Program Spotlight: Basketball
Basketball is more than a game at The 18th Ward—it’s a movement. Over the past year, we’ve seen a remarkable surge in interest and participation, with our Jr. NBA and WNBA programs growing three times larger since last fall. This growth reflects not just the popularity of the sport, but the impact of creating a space where young athletes can develop their skills, build lasting friendships, and experience the joy of competition in a supportive environment.
Every week, gyms across New Orleans come alive with energy as our players practice, learn, and compete. For many of our youth, this is their first chance to feel like a pro—stepping onto the court in real team gear, hearing their names called, and playing with pride.
But the program’s success goes far beyond the game itself. Through basketball, participants are developing confidence, discipline, teamwork, and leadership—skills that translate directly into school, work, and life. Coaches emphasize not only fundamentals and athletic development but also character and community, ensuring that every player grows both on and off the court.
At The 18th Ward, we believe that sports are a powerful tool for opportunity and empowerment. Our basketball program continues to prove that when youth are given access, mentorship, and a chance to shine, they rise to the challenge—ready to dream big and play like the pros.
