Workforce Development at The 18th Ward: Building Pathways Beyond the Game

At The 18th Ward, sports are just a starting point. Our workforce development programs help young people turn passion into purpose — creating real pathways to employment, leadership, and long-term stability. What began as an extension of our coach training model has grown into a powerful engine for opportunity, equipping youth with the skills and confidence to step into the workforce with pride.

The Impact So Far
We’ve created more than 1,000 part-time jobs over the last six years. Through paid coaching roles, certifications, and hands-on leadership training, participants are gaining more than experience — they are building futures. Many of our young people have earned their first paycheck through our programs, developed job-readiness skills, and taken on responsibilities that strengthen both our teams and their own sense of purpose. The growth we’ve seen reflects a simple truth: when young people are trusted with real roles, they rise to the challenge.

Stories That Inspire
Behind every data point is a story. We’ve watched former participants return as mentors, become full-time staff, and guide the next generation of athletes. Young coaches who once stood quietly on the sidelines now lead drills, manage teams, and serve as role models in their neighborhoods. Families tell us they see increased confidence, accountability, and leadership at home — proof that workforce development is about more than employment; it’s about identity and belonging.

What’s Next
As demand grows, so does our vision. We are expanding training opportunities, strengthening partnerships, and working to create even more paid pathways for youth who want to lead. Workforce development at The 18th Ward is not just a program — it’s a promise that every young person deserves a chance to grow, contribute, and build a future beyond the field.
